Personalization by UTM Tags

PersonalizeWP offers powerful personalization rules as part of it’s feature-set that allow you to show and hide content based on who they are, where they have come from and their behaviours and actions on your site.

By using personalization, you can create a more engaging and relevant user experience by tailoring content, recommendations, and interactions to individual preferences. This leads to increased user satisfaction and retention.

How does a UTM Tag-Based Rule help?

UTM Tag personalization rules offer marketers a dynamic way to tailor website content based on specific parameters passed in a URL. By utilizing UTM Tags, you can customize the user experience to align with the context of their visit, making your marketing efforts more targeted and effective.

For instance, if you’re running a targeted email campaign or an ad campaign on Google, you can include specific UTM Tags such as campaign, medium and source in the links. When users click through, you can use seeing these strings in the URL can trigger personalized content on your site, such as displaying a unique discount offer or a tailored landing page that matches the campaign they came from.

This allows you to present different content, offers, or messages to different segments, all from the same landing page, without needing separate URLs.

Creating UTM Tag Rules

You can access PersonalizeWP’s personalization rule tools by going to WP-Admin > Personalize > Dashboard > Personalization.

On this screen, you can view a paginated list of all rules currently active and inactive, and an optional view by category.

Create Rule

Clicking on Create Rule takes you to the screen where you can create a new personalization rule. You enter a name for your rule, select the category you want to place it in, and then choose the UTM condition you want to add from the dropdown.

When adding UTM tags, you should add each tag type individually so that you can choose the comparator and value for each. For instance, below shows a user adding the first condition, UTM Campaign and setting the comparator to match the value they enter.

The comparator for these rules types offer the following options:

  • Equals
  • Does Not Equal
  • Contains
  • Does Not Contain

You can enter any string value in the value field.

You can add multiple conditions to the same rule, thereby building up a set of tags to match against:

Typically, a marketing campaign uses are the three key types of Campaign, Medium and Source. These can be combined to create tracking to understand where your visitors are coming from.

Once you’re done, click on the button to Create Rule to return to the list screen.

Using UTM Tag-Based Rules

You can choose a rule in the Personalize sidebar for any block that you can selected in the Block Editor.

Rules has it’s own dropdown, and you can select any of the rules that are active. In this instance, select your chosen new visitor-based rule and then determine the behaviour for that block (show/hide) if the visitor meets that criteria.

If you wish, you can add multiple rules to the same block, even those of a different type and category – for instance, new visitor and location.

You can also combine a personalization rule with segments and lead score values to create highly targeted content.
