WordPress uses taxonomies to allow you to categorise or tag content in your WordPress site. This is useful to make each post or item distinct from others and you can associate them into groups..
With our Taxonomy-based segmentation option, you can now group visitors based on the categories, tags and terms associated with the content that they have viewed. This is useful to allow you to build sets of users that are interested in specific types of content.
For instance, if you are running a site about animals, you will probably use taxonomies to categorise your content into common pets such as ‘dogs‘, ‘cats‘ or rabbits‘. You can then choose to setup different segments for visitors that are interested each of those terms – such as a segment for visitors that have looked at pages associated with ‘dogs‘ for instance gives you a good indication that they may be a dog owner, or researching dogs as a pet choice.
Using this understanding, you can then show content specific to this group on other pages of your site, giving them more of what they are interested in.
Creating Taxonomy-Based Segments
You can access PersonalizeWP’s segmentation tools by going to WP-Admin > Personalize > Dashboard > Segmentation.
On this screen, you can view a paginated list of all segments currently active and inactive, including the type, reason and a count of all visitor profiles in each group.
Create Segment
Clicking on Create Segment takes you to the screen where you can create a new grouping. You enter a name for your segment and then choose Type > Taxonomy from the dropdown.
After making this choice, your screen will then change to allow you to choose conditions.
For this segment type, the dropdown field will allow you to select the taxonomy that you want to monitor. And if you don’t see what you need, then there is a search box to find and add a term that is not listed.
You can add as many taxonomies as you wish by adding multiple conditions, and you can choose to use OR / AND matching if you choose more than one.
Click on the button to Create Segment and return to the list screen.
Using Taxonomy-Based Segments
You can choose a segment in the Personalize sidebar for any block that you can selected in the Block Editor.
Segments has it’s own dropdown, and you can select any of the segments that are active. In this instance, choose your taxonomy-based segment and choose the behaviour for that block (show/hide) if the visitor meets that criteria.
You can combine a segment with personalization rules and lead score values to create highly targeted content.
Segmentation Actions
Visitors are automatically added to segments when they meet the criteria. For instance, if you have a segment for ‘Visited Dogs Category’, then when a user visits a page associated with that taxonomy, they will be added to that group immediately.
